Early Life and Education: Byrd attended elementary school at South Lawrence Elementary in Loretto, Tennessee. He excelled in reading and spelling, often far outpacing his fellow students in reading competitions. He attributes his love of reading to his mother, who frequently encouraged his avid reading, and his teachers who did the same. He attended Loretto High School in Loretto, Tennessee where he studied health science in preparation for a career in nursing. It was during his high school education that he discovered emergency medicine and decided to pursue a career as a paramedic instead. In the fall of 2001, he attended the EMT-Basic program at Columbia State Community College in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee before enrolling in the nursing program at the University of North Alabama in Florence, Alabama in the spring of 2002. After only a semester, he quit the nursing program and returned to EMS. In 2012, he returned to school at Northwest Shoals Community College in Muscle Shoals, Alabama where he was simultaneously enrolled in the paramedic education programs of Northwest Shoals and the Rural/Metro Academy. He completed his paramedic education in 2013 at the Rural/Metro Academy.

Occupation: In 2002, Byrd went to work for a small ambulance company called Ambulance Services, Inc. in Linden, Tennessee. Since he was too young to be insured as a driver, he was sent to the company’s Nashville, Tennessee office to work as an EMT. Over the next ten years, he worked for multiple private ambulance companies in the Nashville area. After returning to school to complete his paramedic education, he worked for CardioLabs, Inc. in Franklin, Tennessee interpreting ECG data from Holter monitors before going to work for Maury Regional Medical Center EMS in Columbia, Tennessee. He is currently a Critical Care Paramedic for Maury Regional Medical Center.

Influences: Byrd is a fan of Mark Twain, and often quotes “You should respect your superiors… if you have any.” He also cites Stephen King and John Grisham as influences on his writing. He attended a writing master class with Dan Brown and is a fan of Aaron Sorkin.

Inner Demons (2023): Inner Demons is heavily influenced by Byrd’s own experiences as a paramedic. In fact, the emergency calls described in the book are fictionalized versions of actual events he has experienced. He has said that he wanted the book to be as real as possible, to give people a better understanding of the things that EMS experiences, and the toll that those things take on those who experience them. The book follows the story of Alex Jackson, a paramedic who is struggling with PTSD and depression.
